Lightbox photo-sharing app shutting down June 15 after team joins Facebook

Facebook has gobbled up another photo-sharing service, only this time it’s not officially making an acquisition. Lightbox , the Instagram alternative that millions of Android users relied on while that other app took more than a year to arrive, is following the competition and joining Facebook. The difference is that Facebook isn’t acquiring the company, just the people who built it. On the Lightbox blog, a message credited to co-founders Thai Tran and Nilesh Patel states that “the Lightbox team is joining Facebook, where we’ll have the opportunity to build amazing products for Facebook’s 500+ million mobile users.” As a result of the Lightbox staff joining the Facebook mobile team, Lightbox will shut down on June 15. New sign-ups have already been closed and the entire system will be shutdown next month, so members have until then to download all of their Lightbox photos.

Facebook for Android being updated to include larger photos in timeline and bigger album previews

Facebook is heading towards a multibillion dollar IPO this week, so the company is putting its best foot forward. The most noticeable tweak will be that images will be larger and take up the entire screen in the timeline.

Facebook + Instagram = $1 billion acquisition

Yup, Facebook has just dropped $1 billion in order to acquire the popular photo-sharing app Instagram. Announced for Android less than a week ago and continuing to rise in popularity, Instagram went from an iPhone exclusive with 30 million members to a cross-platform service with more than 31 million members. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg just announced the purchase and confirmed that Instagram’s team will join the company. Facebook will not directly get in the way of the product, choosing instead to let Instagram grow “independently” and not working to “integrate everything into Facebook.” Instagram will not force members to post photos to Facebook and will continue working towards exporting to multiple social networks. Facebook will offer behind-the-scenes resources to the Instagram team in order to make it a better product.

Facebook buys Instagram for $1 Billion

Mark Zuckerberg has just announced via Facebook that the world’s biggest social network has agreed to acquire the photo-sharing service Instagram, which has over 30 million users of its own. The deal is reported to be for a staggering $1 Billion, leaving the founders at Instagram dancing in the streets (we assume). The service will remain as it currently exists for now, though we expect to see tighter Facebook integration soon. For his part, Zuck says that they will largely leave Instagram in tact for the time being, and will look at bringing Instagram technology to other Facebook services. Update:

Fast Facebook is a beta app that’s already 2x as fast as Facebook for Android

The Facebook Android app isn’t very good, and speed is one adjective that will seemingly never be applied to the app. Fast Facebook tries to address that problem with an alternative client whose name sums up its mission. I won’t tell you that the app is great, because it’s not and still in beta, but it is good in many regards. And it’s good in the one area that Facebook can’t seem to get right – speed. Fast Facebook tends to load a Facebook stream quicker than the official Facebook Android app.
