The release of Mountain Lion (10.8), the new version of Mac OS X announced by Apple Thursday, brought an end to the seven-months-old lifespan of OS X 10.7 Lion. Apple claims the ninth major release of the desktop operating system brings popular apps and features from iPad to the Mac and accelerates the pace of OS X innovation
Apple’s Mountain Lion update to Mac OS X is an affirmation of just how important the cloud and iOS integration has become to anyone who uses a desktop Mac. More than 100 new features have been added to the operating system, and many emphasize Apple’s desire to create a single platform that integrates mobile, social and cloud features across multiple devices.
When Apple launched Mac OS X Lion last July, it brought the Macintosh operating system ever closer to the experience folks had gotten accustomed to on the iPad and iPhone. Now, just seven months later, Apple today unveils OS X Mountain Lion, an early preview version for developers.
The newest Apple operating system, Mountain Lion, won't make its way to the masses until this summer, but developer nerds have gotten their hands on it, letting us in on the best (and worst) parts of our computer's future brains. If last July's Lion release made Macs look more like iPads, this year's upgrade will make them look more like iPhones.
Only about half a year has passed since Apple released Mac OS X Lion, but the Cupertino-based company is already teasing us with a peek at the next version of its operating system.
What to look forward to
